Blog Contributor Guidelines

Welcome to Shippys.org’s blog contributor program! We appreciate your interest in sharing your maritime knowledge and experiences with our global seafarer community. To maintain high-quality, informative, and respectful content, please follow these guideline

1. Who Can Contribute?

We welcome submissions from:
✅ Active or retired seafarers (deck officers, engineers, ratings, etc.)
✅ Maritime trainers and industry experts
✅ Maritime students with well-researched articles
✅ Shipping professionals with valuable insights

Note: Contributors must have genuine maritime experience or expertise.

2. Content Requirements

✅ Accepted Topics

  • Career advice for seafarers
  • Technical guides (navigation, engineering, safety, etc.)
  • Personal experiences at sea (lessons learned, challenges overcome)
  • Industry trends and innovations
  • Mental health and wellness at sea
  • Regulatory updates (STCW, SOLAS, MARPOL, etc.)

❌ Prohibited Content

  • Plagiarized or AI-generated content (we verify originality)
  • Promotional posts for specific companies/products (unless sponsored)
  • Offensive, discriminatory, or unprofessional language
  • Misinformation or unverified claims
  • Political or religious debates

3. Writing Standards

Formatting

  • Word Count: 800–2,000 words (longer guides are welcome if well-structured)
  • Language: Clear, professional English (non-native speakers are welcome, but content should be proofread)
  • Structure: Use headings, bullet points, and short paragraphs for readability
  • Images: Include high-quality photos/diagrams (must have rights or attribution)

Tone

  • Professional yet conversational (like sharing advice with a fellow seafarer)
  • Fact-based (cite sources where needed)
  • Encouraging and helpful

4. Submission Process

  1. Pitch First: Email contributors@shippys.org with:
    • Proposed topic (1–2 sentences)
    • Brief outline (key points to cover)
    • Your maritime background
  2. Approval: We’ll respond within 3–5 business days.
  3. Submit Draft: Send your complete article as a Word doc or Google Doc (no PDFs).
  4. Review & Editing: Our team may suggest edits for clarity or accuracy.
  5. Publication: Approved posts go live within 1–2 weeks, depending on our schedule.

5. Author Rights & Credits

  • Byline: Your name (or pen name) and bio will be included.
  • Editing: We reserve the right to make minor edits for readability.
  • Originality: You must own the content; we check for plagiarism.
  • Sharing: You’re encouraged to share your published post on social media!

Note: We don’t currently pay for guest posts but offer exposure to our maritime audience.

6. Code of Conduct

  • Be respectful: No personal attacks or discriminatory language.
  • Stay accurate: Double-check facts, especially regarding regulations.
  • Disclose conflicts: Mention if you’re affiliated with a company/product discussed.

Violations may result in content removal or revoked contributor/Author privileges.
